Swiss tents or luxury camps, camel or jeep safari, Sam or Khuri. Everything to know before a night under the Thar sky.
A night in the Thar desert is the highlight of most Rajasthan trips. Golden dunes at sunset, a campfire, folk dance and a sky packed with stars. Here is how to choose the right camp and get the most from it.
Sam or Khuri?
Sam, about 40 km from Jaisalmer, has the larger dunes and more camps, so it is lively and well connected. Khuri, a little further, is quieter with smaller dunes and a village feel. Choose Sam for energy and Khuri for calm. For the most remote stays, ask us about camps deeper in the desert.
Types of camps
- Standard Swiss tents with attached washrooms, good value for groups.
- Deluxe and luxury tents with better beds, private sit-outs and more space.
- Remote camps away from the main strip for a quieter night and darker skies.
What a usual evening looks like
You arrive by mid afternoon, take a jeep or camel safari to the dunes for sunset, then return to camp for tea and snacks. The evening brings a cultural programme with Kalbelia dance and folk music, followed by a buffet dinner. Most packages include breakfast the next morning.
What to pack
- A warm layer for winter nights, which can drop close to freezing.
- Sunglasses, a cap and sunscreen for the dunes.
- Comfortable shoes you do not mind filling with sand.
- A power bank, since charging points can be limited.
A few tips
Book early for weekends and the October to February season. Ask for a tent away from the stage if you prefer a quiet night. Step outside after the music ends: the stars are the real show.
