How many days you need, which cities pair well, and the small choices that make a Rajasthan trip feel easy instead of rushed.
Rajasthan rewards travellers who plan with a little breathing room. The forts, markets and desert are spread across long distances, so the order you visit them matters as much as the list itself. These are the tips we share with almost every traveller who calls our Jaipur desk.
1. Give it at least 7 days
A week covers the classic loop of Jaipur, Jodhpur and Jaisalmer without living in the car. With 10 to 12 days you can add Udaipur and a slower morning or two, which is where many of the best memories happen.
2. Pair cities by distance, not by fame
Jaipur to Jodhpur is about 6 hours by road, Jodhpur to Jaisalmer about 5. Udaipur sits to the south, so it fits best at the start or end of a trip. A smart route avoids doubling back and saves a full day.
3. Mix road and rail
Overnight trains between Jaipur and Jaisalmer save a hotel night and a long drive. For families or groups, a private car with a local driver gives more freedom for photo stops and village visits.
4. Start early, rest at noon
Forts like Amber, Mehrangarh and Jaisalmer are best before 10 am. Use the hot middle of the day for lunch, a haveli visit or a nap, then head out again for sunset.
5. Keep one night for the desert
A night at a camp near Sam or Khuri, with dunes, folk music and a sky full of stars, is the moment most travellers remember. Book it mid-trip so you are not too tired to enjoy it.
6. Leave space for markets
Johari Bazaar in Jaipur, the clock tower market in Jodhpur and the lanes inside Jaisalmer fort are worth an unhurried evening each. Carry some cash for small shops.
7. Let a local planner handle the joins
Hotels, transfers, guides and timings are easier when one team handles them together. Tell us your dates and pace, and we will shape a day-wise plan around you.
